VAM has a symbiotic relationship with the plant it attaches and grows hyphae outward from the root. Its hyphae and exudates form the basis for improved soil structure and humus production, and also feed the plant minerals and water. The hyphae of VAM can spread over half a meter from the roots in a growing season and have the ability to solubilise minerals and translocate them back to the plant. It can do the same with water. The fungal hyphae are very fine giving them the ability to extract minerals and penetrate places roots cant fit dramatically increasing the root surface area. As part of the symbiotic relationship in return for minerals and water the plant feeds the VAM carbohydrates back out through the roots, some of these carbohydrates are converted by the VAM into a sticky exudate called Glomalin. Glomalin is critical in building soil structure and soil carbon. It binds soil particles together forming aggregates and protects soil carbon from oxidisation.
